You'll avoid obstacles, fight enemies, and gain new abilities while trying to locate keys to unlock doors within the area. There are hidden areas but these are mostly placed in dungeons rather than the open map.Įach major area serves as a large dungeon teeming with platforming challenges and combat opportunities.
Itorah game upgrade#
It's more of a semi-open linear adventure as the player is guided through the map but you can explore if you wish to earn exclusive items meant to upgrade your health, stamina, or healing abilities. All of it is meant to open new paths but this isn't a Metroidvania. You'll have access to a limited selection of attacks and moves but over the course of the adventure gain new mobility options such as dashing mid-air and new attacks like a ground slam. ITORAH's gameplay is focused on platforming and basic combat.

Why not just make all the dialogue this way? It can be annoying that the dialogue doesn't always auto-scroll, sometimes the dialogue does but in rare instances it is strange. Most are placed in the background with the exception of 2 villagers who are constant throughout the game. The excellent animations are highlighted with a smooth transition between emotional states and interactions between all the characters. With the player learning of guardians who help regulate the world, different kingdoms, and your own life through brief visions. The story is straightforward but adds more layers to it always remains simple. Despite being part of an extinct race many are welcoming as you may hold the key to stopping the plague. After escaping the young girl named Itorah learns that humans have been extinct for centuries, worse is that a plague is causing the surrounding creatures to become increasingly more hostile. It isn't long before the girl is captured by deadly spiders but after freeing herself befriends a talking ax. The adventure starts with a young girl waking up in the middle of nowhere. A classic adventure that leads you through exceptionally designed areas as you attempt to rid the world of a plague. It's a classic concept with easy controls and a basic story that doesn't overstay its welcome. ITORAH is a traditional adventure wrapped in stunning visuals and a superb presentation.
Itorah game update#
I truly hope that more reviewers and players voice their concerns about the controls and that the developer decides to make some small changes because with just a minor update the game could easily go from average to excellent and all those platform sections in the game that feel laborious could become great fun rather than a slog.Many gamers are starved for anything innovative but there's nothing wrong with keeping things simple. It's a very odd choice, when you consider that making the game more responsive, especially when the character is airborn, would take about five seconds for the developer to do, in the Unity engine they've chosen to work with.

Great graphics, good music, decent story and fine combat and whilst the game doesn't have the same challenge in boss fights or excellent, multi-branched level-design that, say, Ori and the Blind Forrest or Hollow Knight have, a game that isn't at the bleeding edge of difficulty, sending players along a more linear path definitely has a place in the Metroidvania genre.Īs it is, it feels like the games boss and level design are designed to be forgiving simply because the controls aren't up to the quality we've come to expect from the genre.

I feel like this really could have been an absolute gem ****.
